Four scent compositions based on the life of the eucalyptus.
i. Fresh eucalyptus, the scent emanating from the concentration of essential oils in the leaves of the trees (a scent extracted through a distillation process at Quinta). From here, it goes one of two ways:
ii. Either, it succumbs to wildfires, in which case a heavy smell of tar, smoke, dry and burnt wood emanates, or;
iii. It makes its way to the processing plant to be made into paper. These factories typically use sulfur compounds known as TRS (total reduced sulfur) to break down wood chips into usable cellulose fibers, making it part of the kraft pulping process. These compounds leech into the air surrounding the factories, stinking a huge radius with the smell of, predominantly, rotten eggs and sulfur gases.
iv. Finally, an iteration of paper itself—a calm, dusty, and soft smell that seems inconspicuous.
These four scent compositions are presented in separate unlabelled vials, yet easily recognisable, via nose, by the visitor.
