Martin Tomov & Maria Ilieva

artistic duo

	about;

View our CVsAs a collaborative duo, we are fascinated by intersections of visual art, ecology andtheir inherent politicisations.

Martin Tomov is an anthropologist by education, and by profession he is part of the team of Greenpeace – Bulgaria. With an interest in fine arts, poetry, acting and theater, Martin undertakes social projects and engaged practices with an eye on various social and environmental issues

. He has experience in projects exposing police violence and racism in urban environments, and is the author of research on the cultural history of antidepressants and the impact of climate adaptation policies on marginalized communities in Rotterdam. Today he deals with issues related to the climate crisis, the environment, and the biodiversity of the Black
Sea.

Maria Ilieva is a multidisciplinary artist, with practice mainly in the field of painting and text. Spending her life between three countries, Maria has been confronted with the reality of immigrants abroad since childhood, with the urgent need to adapt in unfamiliar environments, as well as the boundaries of language. Relying on personal and collective memory, as well as various methods of memorization, she seeks ways to rethink boundaries – both social and self-imposed.

“Beyond

Istoriya Slavyanobalgarska” is a film that explores the notion of the city by looking at parts of its periphery and their specificities. This infrastructural synechdoche directs the conversation to the ways in which urban space creates meanings, narratives and poetics for itself, without the need for additional interventions – how an urban place becomes a topos for the themes of a transforming world, inequalities and coexistence.
The essay “The Anthropocene in Sofia: more-than-human Perspectives and Infrastructural Poetics” is a continuation of our research published on Journal for Social Vision.

Maria Ilieva (2001) is an artist residing in Lisbon with a practice based in drawing and olfaction. Spending her life between three countries, she was confronted from an early age with the reality of immigrants abroad, the necessary speed for adaptation in unfamiliar environments and the limits of language. This in turn shaped her worldview into a fragmentary familiarity imposed on unknown situations - feeling half-present, and only somewhat understood.

Her methods of collecting, categorizing and hoarding, and their associated ways of perceiving, merge with intrigue and observation for matters of memory, processes of remembering and forgetting, dreaming as visual and emotional memory, and the division of our personal mental space. She often uses whimsicalness or absurdity to search for a synthesis in cognition.

Using tracing paper and graphite, the delicate materials further merge with their surroundings - posing questions of beginnings and ends of visible and invisible spaces. By collaging and layering these fragments, an overlap is produced, resulting in a taxonomy of the elusive, the transient, the implicit. Each piece overlapping the other, as traces of living and thinking, she seeks ways to make sense of boundaries - both social and self-imposed.

She works at Mediamatic’s Aromalab, Europe’s largest open scent library. As scent
receptors are positioned closest to the part of the brain storing memory, the olfactory
aspect to her works further emanates the intangible, delicate whiffs of information we
might not even realise we come in contact with.
